Director Gary Fleder Talks 'Homefront' and Kate. Kate Bosworth and Winona Rider are also unlikely choices for their roles in the film and both give great performances. Can you talk about casting and working with them on this film? Fleder: I want to really give a brief shout out to those two. For me, I’ve always liked Kate. I’ve been a fan of Kate, but I did not know before making this film that she could do what she does in this movie. People who have seen the movie, everyone’s talking about Kate’s performance because it’s unbelievably brave. She plays at times a very ugly character, physically ugly and emotionally ugly. There are no boundaries in that performance. It is an unbelievably powerful and indelible performance. So I’m really happy to see her do that kind of work and it just showed that she’s got a kind of a new a transformation ahead of her in terms of her acting. With Winona Ryder, listen Winona’s one of the biggest movie stars in the last 20 years and I think again people have forgotten how good she is. I had seen her in the film The Iceman with Michael Shannon. I thought she was great, but still unbelievably beautiful. So when I came to her about the idea of playing this beaten down biker chick, which is a very rough role. Again, she came into it pretty fearlessly and really is just a very smart actress with a lot of ideas and how she should look and how she should dress. Her relationship with Franco in the movie is a psychosexual relationship. She and Franco are kind of like Sid and Nancy. There is a Sid and Nancy quality to it. It’s great to see Winona back and doing great work. Also, I think Izabela Vidovic, who plays Statham’s daughter is wonderful. Who am I to say this, but when I first saw Natalie Portman in Beautiful Girls years ago, to me you knew that between that and The Professional that Natalie Portman wasn’t going away. I think Izabela, and I’ll say it right here man, this girl, she’s remarkable. Having worked with a lot of young actors, she’s amazing. I think she’s kind of the catalyst. She’s the glue in this movie for some of the other characters. She’s the plot connection. I watched this on the first day it was released here. It was the first time I watched a Kate's movie at a theater even though I've been a fan since 2007. Hehe.. And I have to say I wasn't disappointed. It was a really fun action movie with amazing performances from the cast, especially our Kate. Even though she didn't have a big role, she stole the show in every scene she was in. James had a fun role, and I like the way he approached it. Jason showed his softer side, and it was sweet [just look at his expressions when he was with his daughter]. For the action scenes, of course, he was amazing. , Winona's character was kinda comedic, she made me laugh [in a good way] a few times. And last but not least, Izabela, she was great! I really think she's gonna be a big star in the future.
